Final Disposition at Trial – September 12, 2017

Accused: Joseph Shannon of Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia
Facts: On March 16, 2017, five charges were sworn under the Canada Elections Act in the Provincial Court of Nova Scotia. The charges resulted from an investigation into events that took place between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2015.
Offence:

Joseph Shannon was charged with:

  • wilfully making contributions to a registered association and to candidates of a particular registered party, between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2008, that exceeded the contribution limits established by the Canada Elections Act;
  • wilfully making contributions to a registered association and to candidates of a particular registered party, between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2011, that exceeded the contribution limits established by the Canada Elections Act;
  • wilfully making contributions to candidates of a particular registered party, between January 1, 2011, and December 31, 2011, that exceeded the contribution limits established by the Canada Elections Act;
  • knowingly making contributions to candidates of a particular registered party, between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2015, that exceeded the contribution limits established by the Canada Elections Act; and
  • knowingly making contributions to candidates of a particular registered party, between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2015, that exceeded the contribution limits established by the Canada Elections Act.
Plea: On September 12, 2017, Joseph Shannon pleaded guilty to all charges.
Sentence: Absolute discharge.
