When Should I Complain?
Canvassing – Apartment/Condominium/Gated Community/Multiple-Residence Building
The Act requires that the person in control of a building must allow door to door canvassing between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. during the election period.
With respect to a multiple-residence building (ex. university dormitory or retirement home), the Act requires that the person in control of the building must allow campaigning in a common area* between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. during the election period.
The person in control of a multiple-residence building is permitted to prevent campaigning in common areas of the building if the residents' physical or emotional well-being may be harmed by the activity. These are narrow exceptions that apply only in rare circumstances.
* The term "common areas" refers to an area or areas that may be used by all occupants of, and visitors to, a building (eg. lobby, hallways, stairwells).
