Commissioner of Canada Elections Announces
the Laying of Canada Elections Act
and Criminal Code Charges


Gatineau, March 11, 2019

The Commissioner of Canada Elections, Mr. Yves Côté, has announced that one charge has been laid under the Canada Elections Act, as requested by the Director of Public Prosecutions. Two charges were also laid under the Criminal Code.

Ms. Sonia Fortin is charged with failing to submit the electoral campaign return, along with other related documents, within four months after polling day. Ms. Fortin acted as the Official Agent for Mr. Charles Poulin, a candidate during the 42nd general election.

Moreover, Ms. Fortin and Mr. Poulin are both charged under the Criminal Code, for committing theft of a value estimated at more than $5,000 from the candidate's electoral campaign.

The Commissioner of Canada Elections is an independent officer responsible for ensuring compliance with, and enforcement of, the Canada Elections Act and the federal Referendum Act.

The Public Prosecution Service of Canada (PPSC) is responsible for prosecuting offences under federal jurisdiction in a manner that is free of any improper influence and that respects the public interest. The PPSC is also responsible for providing prosecution-related advice to federal law enforcement agencies across Canada.
